NRDC Action Votes Launches with First Television Ad

Independent expenditure campaign aims to support environmental champions

Washington (April 28, 2020) – NRDC Action Votes placed its first television advertisement, supporting Michigan Senator Gary Peters because of his work protecting public health and the environment. This ad represents the launch of NRDC Action Votes, an independent expenditure committee that advocates for healthy air and water, clean energy jobs, climate action and protecting wild places.

“Given the crisis facing our nation, we need leaders in Washington who respect science and work to protect public health,” said Jossie Steinberg, Director of NRDC Action Votes. “That’s why we are stepping up to support Senator Peters.”

“This year’s election will have tremendous consequences for healthy air, clean water and climate action, and we will be doing much more in the months ahead,” Steinberg said.

NRDC Action Votes, an independent-expenditure-only, non-connected political committee, is supporting Senate and House candidates who are committed to protecting public health and the environment. For this ad, NRDC Action Votes is spending more than $500,000 as part of a $1 million coalition campaign.

This ad was developed in conjunction with LCV Victory Fund and EDF Action Votes and will be run by one of the three groups depending on the media market.

With Michigan facing a public health crisis from COVID-19, this ad highlights how Peters has protected health and welfare in the state. The ad, “Diagnosed,” will run on broadcast and cable across Michigan, and tells the story of Cathy, a cancer survivor whose illness may be linked to toxic PFAS contamination in the water near Wurtsmith Air Force Base. Senator Peters wrote provisions to address Michigan’s PFAS crisis into the 2020 national defense spending bill that was then signed into law in December of last year, and he was able to secure billions of dollars to help secure a clean-up. PFAS contamination is particularly widespread in Michigan and is linked to cancer, developmental issues, and other harmful health effects.

WATCH: “Diagnosed”

“Diagnosed”

I was diagnosed with cancer and arthritis at the age of 28

When we learned about the PFAS contamination in the water we suspected there was a link

And a lot of people were having similar problems

For decades, no one was doing anything about it

That’s why I’m so grateful for Senator Gary Peters

He’s fighting to get these contaminated areas cleaned up

And making sure this never happens again

What he’s doing makes a difference

We need him to continue the fight

About NRDC Action Votes

NRDC Action Votes promotes the goals of the NRDC Action Fund. It is an independent expenditure-only, non-connected political committee that advocates for healthy air and water, supporting clean energy jobs, fight climate change and protect wild places. NRDC Action Votes will support climate champions who have supported clean energy, clean air and clean water, and defended public lands and wildlife. We’ll oppose candidates who want to do the bidding of the fossil fuel industry and who will support Trump’s environmental rollbacks.
