WASHINGTON (Sept. 10, 2024) - Although O’Mara fell short in his gubernatorial bid, his strong position connected climate change initiatives with economic growth that was felt in the primary and serves as a campaign template for how environmental issues can resonate with Democratic voters.
O’Mara helped bring thousands of clean energy jobs to Delaware and fought to reduce air pollution and to protect clean water and natural resources was a central component of an ad NRDC Action Votes ran to support him. By featuring endangered Delaware animals stumping for O’Mara, the NRDC Action Votes ad, “Real Deal” helped cut through traditional campaign noise and emphasize how O’Mara was the different kind of candidate Delaware families deserved.
“Collin O’Mara distinguished himself as a proven leader from helping to secure The Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub, which invests more than $250 million in Delaware’s clean energy future to fighting big polluters to protect Delaware’s clean air and water, and we were proud to support his candidacy,” said Jocelyn Steinberg, Director of NRDC Action Votes. “Congratulations to Matt Meyer for winning the Delaware Democratic Gubernatorial primary and we hope environmental issues will continue to play an important role in the general election debate.”
Democratic nominee Meyer talked on the campaign trail about fighting for a cleaner, greener Delaware through green jobs and infrastructure on his website and as part of his Real Plans Policy book. As New Castle County Executive he preserved open space, transitioned local government away from fossil fuels, and made the communities more resilient against extreme weather.
Data continues to show that voters are concerned about climate change and candidates can win trust by showing how addressing it can create new economic opportunities. NRDC Action Votes is an independent expenditure political committee affiliated with the NRDC Action Fund. It works to avert dangerous climate change, support healthy people and thriving communities, and conserve and protect nature and wildlife.
